How to get comprehensive Medicare coverage

If you're looking for coverage of all your health-care needs, you need to look beyond Original Medicare, Part A and Part B. Original Medicare doesn't cover everything, but you can buy other Medicare plans to round out your coverage.

A Medigap policy, also known as a Medicare Supplement Plan, would cover some of your Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs. For example, a Medigap plan might cover copayments, coinsurance, and foreign travel; details depend on the plan you choose.

You also may wish to sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan to add prescription drug benefits to your coverage.

Even that combination of coverage excludes several things, like dental, vision, and hearing services.

You may be able to get closer to 100% coverage with a private Medicare Advantage plan, also known as Medicare Part C. These plans are legally required to cover everything that Original Medicare does (except for hospice care), but may include other benefits such as vision, dental, and hearing. They may also include prescription drug coverage and access to wellness programs.

Keep in mind that you must continue paying your Medicare Part B premium if you join a Medicare Part C plan.

If you join a plan that offers many services, you may find that many of your health needs are met, but there could still be certain aspects of health care that remain uncovered (like long-term nursing home care). Some private companies offer long-term care insurance, but these are not Medicare-based policies.
